#========================================================== #========================================================== # Program: Don't Tell Me... # Author: Thomas F. Hespos, Jr. # # Description: Emulates Eddie Van Halen's tone on "Don't Tell # Me (What Love Can Do)" off of the Van Halen album # "Balance." Drop your low E-string to D and play the # opening riff. Sounds pretty close, no? # # Rig Notes: Patch was created with '93 Les Paul Studio Lite, with # Hot Ceramic Humbuckers, using the bridge pickup. # Guitar -> GSP -> Mackie 1202VLZ -> Crown # Powerbase-1 -> Peavey T-300 speakers. # #========================================================== #========================================================== GSP-2101 # Device ID 2.02.1 # Software version Don't Tell Me... # Program Name U # Algorithm Number #========================================================== # Module Parameter Settings Section #========================================================== Comp (On, 2:1, -30, -6) # Compressor Dist (On, SaturatedTube, 4.0, 8.0) # Distortion EQ (+6, +2, 0, 0, 0, +2, +4) # EQ Mvol (0) # Master Volume FxL (No Sum) # Effects Loop NGt (On, -65, 8, 20, 0, 90, 48, 5.0) # Noise Gate 2x1 (100, 100, 100) # 2x1 Mixer Swah (Bypass) # Smooth Wah 4PCho (On, 100, 10.00, 30.00, 20.00, 40.00, 0.25, 6.75) # 4 Phase Chorus 5x2 (85,-50, 85, 50, 75, -50, 75, 50, 100, 0, 100, 100) # 5x2 Mixer Dly1 (On, 0.500, 9, 100, Off) # Mono Delay 1.0 3x2 (25, 0, 100, 50, 100, 0, 100, 100) #3x2 Mixer Mmix (Wet 100%) # Wet 2 Dry #========================================================== #User Algorithm Input Linkage #========================================================== 2x1 <- ( Left Input, Right Input ) SWah <- ( 2x1 Out 1) 4PCho <- ( SWah Out 1) 5x2 <- ( 4PCho Out 1, 4PCho Out 2, 4PCho Out 3, 4PCho Out 4, SWah Out 1 ) Dly1 <- ( 5x2 Out 1) 3x2 <- ( Dly1 Out 1, 5x2 Out 1, 5x2 Out 2 ) MMix <- ( 3x2 Out 1, 3x2 Out 2 ) #========================================================== # End of Program #========================================================== #========================================================== # Please send all feedback to spos@dtd.org #========================================================== From TOM_HESPOS@yr.com Wed Jan 24 06:38:37 1996 Received: from nova.unix.portal.com (nova.unix.portal.com [156.151.1.101]) by jobe.shell.portal.com (8.6.11/8.6.5) with ESMTP id GAA00342 for ; Wed, 24 Jan 1996 06:38:36 -0800 From: TOM_HESPOS@yr.com Received: from yandr-bh.yr.com (yandr-bh.yr.com [206.33.89.66]) by nova.unix.portal.com (8.6.11/8.6.5) with ESMTP id GAA11604 for ; Wed, 24 Jan 1996 06:38:35 -0800 Received: (from uucp@localhost) by yandr-bh.yr.com (8.6.12/8.6.11) id JAA09129 for ; Wed, 24 Jan 1996 09:41:56 -0500 Received: from smtp.yr.com(152.146.5.136) by yandr-bh.yr.com via smap (V1.3) id smaa09117; Wed Jan 24 09:41:42 1996 Received: from ccMail by smtp.yr.com (IMA Internet Exchange 1.04b) id 106448c0; Wed, 24 Jan 96 09:39:08 -0500 Mime-Version: 1.0 Date: Wed, 24 Jan 1996 09:31:58 -0500 Message-ID: <106448c0@yr.com> Subject: Patch: Don't Tell Me... It's the first one I ever made, so don't expect complexity. What I wanted to do was emulate Eddie Van Halen's new post-OU812 tone. Not a difficult task. Incidentally, if anyone knows how to make the GSP sound like the EVH of old, I will kiss your feet, I swear. These days, Eddie's tone is a lot more dry and processed-sounding. The GSP can do this easily. Awright, it's custom algorithm time. I've got this algorithm called "Lead" which is simple and adds life to your run-of-the-mill tube distortion patches. Here are the digital effects in order: 2X1 mixer, 4 Phase Chorus, 5X2 mixer, Mono Delay 1.0, and 3X2 mixer. Link the effects as follows (ins to outs): 2X1 mixer input 1 -> Left input 2X1 mixer input 2 -> Right input 4 Phase Chorus input 1 -> 2X1 mixer output 1 5X2 mixer input 1 -> 4 Phase Chorus output 1 5X2 mixer input 2 -> 4 Phase Chorus output 2 5X2 mixer input 3 -> 4 Phase Chorus output 3 5X2 mixer input 4 -> 4 Phase Chorus output 4 5X2 mixer input 5 -> 2X1 Mixer output 1 Mono Delay 1.0 input 1 -> 5X2 Mixer output 1 3X2 mixer input 1 -> Mono Delay 1.0 output 1 3X2 mixer input 2 -> 5X2 Mixer output 1 3X2 mixer input 3 -> 5X2 mixer output 2 Left Out -> 3X2 mixer output 1 Right Out -> 3X2 mixer output 2 There, that wasn't so tough, was it? I have other patches that use this algorithm, so hang on to it. I'll post them later. Here are the parameters for the patch: Compressor: On, Ratio 2:1, Thresh -30dB, Level -6dB Distortion: On, Type Saturated Tube, Gain 1 4.0, Gain 2 8.0 Analog EQ: +6, +2, 0, 0, 0, +2, +4 Master Volume: Distortion On 0dB FX Loop: No Sum Stereo Noise Gate: SNGt On, Thresh -65dB, Hyster 8dB, HldTim 20ms, Attack 0ms, Releas 90 ms Attn 48dB, Delay 5.0 ms 2X1 Mixer: I1 Level 100, Pan 0 I2 Level 100, Pan 0 Output 100 4 Phase Chorus: Chorus On, Level 100, Delay 1 10.00 Delay 2 30.00, Delay 3 20.00, Delay 4 40.00 Speed 0.25 Hz, Depth 6.75 ms 5X2 Mixer: I1 Level 85, Pan -50 I2 Level 85, Pan +50 I3 Level 75, Pan -50 I4 Level 75, Pan +50 I5 Level 100, Pan 0 Output 1 - 100 Output 2 - 100 Mono Delay 1.0: Dly1.0 On, Delay .500, Fdback 9%, Level 100, RptHld Off 3X2 Mixer: I1 Level 25, Pan 0 I2 Level 100, Pan 50 I3 Level 100, Pan 0 Output 1 - 100 Output 2 - 100 Wet2Dry: 100% Wet That's it. Have fun playing with the Wet to Dry mixer on this one. I've also linked a CC pedal to the delay to imitate the sound on some of Eddie's solos. I've used this patch to play "Don't Tell Me What Love Can Do" off of the Balance album. With the low E-string tuned down to D, it sounds totally bad ass. Oh yeah. I forgot the now-standard disclaimer: I use a Les Paul Studio along with my own custom rig. So if you're using a different guitar/amp/speaker cabinet, this patch may not generate the intended sound and may, in fact, sound closer to two monkeys making love underwater, yadda yadda yadda. Happy tweaking!!! -TFH Tom_Hespos@yr.com Greetings all: Here's another patch. It's the first one I ever made, so don't expect complexity.
