Dieter's Nixie Tube
Tester
last update: 2011-03-04
August, 22th 2005:
The front plate is done:
The front plate is made of 3mm thick anodised aluminium.
The letters are engraved.
This is only the front plate of the Socket- Box.
The power supply and the meters and in another case.
This Tube Tester will test every Nixie I know. Also Pandicons.
As you can see, also a switch for the typical Z-Voltages (Uclamp)
For example to analyze the blue spot problem of IN-18 tubes and so on.
November, 27th 2005:
The sockets are mounted:
First, thanks to all
who helped me to find these rare sockets!
It took me more than one year to get them all together!
The tester contains the following sockets:

April, 15th 2006:
The wiring is finished:
The wiring took me more than 30 hours.. puhh..
But now.. it's done:
You surely will ask for the schematic!
Here it is:
Keep in mind, that this is only the socket- box!
The rest of the electronic will be in the electronic- box!
I made a test if the plate fits in the
case:
And it did!
I bought that aluminium suitcase at Ebay for $6.
April, 16th 2006:
Ken from the NEONIXIE-L group asked me:
Dieter, the tester looks great!
What is the cylinder that's mounted between the B13D and B9A sockets, on the
right side?
My answer was:
The cylinder is a knob, to lift up the plate when testing front view
nixies.
If I test side view Nixies, the plate lies horizontal in the case.
If I test front view Nixies (the lower and middle row of sockets) I lift it up,
to get a better view of the glow when I sit in front of the tester.
Here you see a 3D animation how I have constructed it:
You see I will put the plate in a holder in the cover of the
case.
At the frontal edge of the front plate there is a hinge.
Moreover, in the lower side of the case there is enough space for the
accessories.
I will put the cables and special adapters there.
March, 04th 2011:
Yes I know - my friends - time went by and I did no update...
But now I will ;-)
Of course the tester has grown.
I made a "Muxing Tester" and some changes, modifications and others.
I will show you that later, what I will show you today is the
Measurement Box
I used the tester for a long time like this for testing Nixie tubes:
Here you see the setup for testing standard IN-18 Nixie tubes.
On the left the power supply, meters, resistor decades, Muxing Tester.
On the right the socket box.
The next picture shows how I tested IN-8 Nixie tubes:
Of course it was a roundabout way to put all the equipment on
the table, connect it all together and so on:
So I planned to put all the parts on the left in one case:
And today I finished the case:
The Coke-Bottle is for the comparison of the size.
It is really a large thing. There will be enough space for wires, Adapters and
so on.
Here you see how it will be set up later.
TO BE CONTINUED.....
Next step will be:
The description of the Muxing Tester, The description of the complete wiring,
finishing of the Measurement box.
